Make-A-Wish Continues to Make a Difference in the Bay Area

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a non-profit organization that seeks to make the wishes of children between 2 ½ and 18 battling life-threatening medical conditions, come true. The Greater Bay Area chapter was founded in 1984. It is now one of the nation’s largest chapters.

My Favorite Charity

I regularly try and give back to the community by donating to local charities and non-profits. The Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area chapter is my favorite charity. I love that every year the organization grants 378 wishes to children who are in dire medical situations. These children are remarkable examples of the power of hope and courage.

Under New Leadership

The Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area chapter serves 17 area counties. Recently, longtime Executive Director and CEO Patricia Wilson stepped down from the organization to pursue other interests. Wilson is best remembered for the amazing Bat-Kid story where then five-year old Miles got to play the part of Batman as downtown San Francisco was turned into Gotham City, and thousands of city and community officials and volunteers worked together to help Miles’s wish come true.

Betsy Biern took over the job on October 3, 2016. She brings a wealth of executive experience and a strong Bay Area connection, having previously been the senior vice-president and chief development officer at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.

Continuing to Make an Impact

One of the early highlights of Biern’s tenure was the wish of young Josiah to be an Oakland Raider. The Make-A-Wish Foundation arranged for Josiah to attend practice and a Sunday night game against the rival Denver Broncos. He also got to be part of the coin-toss.

Josiah met with several Raiders players during weekend, including Derek Carr and Latavius Murray. Josiah asked Murray to score three touchdowns for him. Murray promised to do his best. While three touchdowns wasn’t an impossible task, Murray knew it would be tough against a formidable Denver defense.

However, the star managed to run across the goal line three times, the last touchdown coming in the fourth quarter. Josiah was thrilled.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is about giving hope to children who are battling for their life. This great charity lets kids just be kids for a day. They get to have a dream come true and forget about surgeries, medical procedures, and painful treatments at least for one day.
