Marin County has almost everything: Beautiful landscapes, spectacular homes, world-class shopping, and the beach. The one thing it doesn’t have is snow. While, for most residents that is a definite plus, it’ still nice to go and play in the snow every once in awhile. Luckily, scenic Lake Tahoe is only a three and half hour drive away. Lake Tahoe is the perfect winter playground for residents of Marin.
Best Resorts
Lake Tahoe not only looks beautiful with the white glistening pine trees reflecting off the lake, it is also home to some of the best resorts in the country. If you love strapping on a set of skis or a snowboard and careening downhill, Lake Tahoe gives you plenty of options.
One of the largest resorts in the country, it is easy to see why it once hosted the Winter Olympics. Spread across six peaks, with 43 lifts, and 270 trails there is something here for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. Squaw Valley also regularly attracts some of the top skiers in the world for training and exhibitions.
This former lumber site situated near the northwest shore of Lake Tahoe, is now one of the top ski resorts in the area. Locals often head here instead of the larger Squaw Valley to avoid crowds. The resort has 19 lifts and an incredible cross-country center for people looking for a different kind of ski experience.
Heavenly boasts the highest altitude of any of the Lake Tahoe area resorts, sitting at a breathtaking 10,067 feet. It has 30 lifts and 97 different runs. Heavenly has long been one of the best resorts to spot celebrities enjoying winter fun. While the snow is almost always great, Heavenly also has one of the largest snow making systems in the United States.
Fun Off the Slopes
There is more to do in Tahoe than just hitting the slopes. From November through March, Squaw Valley also hosts the world famous Alpenglow Winter Film Series. During select Saturdays, you can watch films created by different daredevil climbers and extreme skiers.
Close to the lake in nearby Tahoe City you can enjoy the new 4,000 square-foot ice rink while enjoying scenic views of the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park. Near the rink you can get a cup of the best Venezuelan spiced chocolate outside of Venezuela at the Basecamp Hotel. You can also wet your whistle with some Swiss raclette or one of several premium craft beers the hotel has on tap.
Having a fun and charming winter playground as close as Lake Tahoe is just another reason Marin is the best place to live.
